How to Start 2021 off on the Right Foot

Start 2021 off

It’s that time of the year again! Christmas bells are almost here and before long we’ll be ready to welcome another unpredictable year in our lives. At the start 2021 off the year, we often think we know what a goal or resolution will take to fulfill, but we end up guessing and then never really do.

To avoid this, we’ve selected some essential tips to start 2021 off right.

Let yourself evolve

If you’ve ever set a resolution, you likely know it doesn’t always go as planned. The reasons why can vary. Perhaps you didn’t really plan it out, it wasn’t what you thought it would be or you didn’t really want it. Think about the last time you failed at achieving a goal. Why did it happen? Was it because you weren’t clear? Maybe, even, the goal you had in mind was just not attainable.

Or could the reason simply be that you just didn’t want it that much? You might be telling yourself you wanted to reach that resolution, but that isn’t always enough. Instead, look at your resolution as a New Year’s evolution, and watch the process of change happen in front of your eyes. Allowing yourself to evolve into a successful business person is how you can reach your goal.

Be Patient

You didn’t miss the goal by one simple, momentary lack of action. Usually its months or years of buildup. Learning patience is often difficult, but it’s necessary as we build new routines and habits. The process of going to the gym, taking a walk or making better food choices is something we can do every day. So is picking up the phone to make calls, sending prospective clients an email and setting goals that you WILL achieve. Just take the time and be patient. Change comes slowly when it sticks.

Be compassionate towards yourself

As you set out to achieve new goals, break new barriers and hit new milestones, you must keep in mind that it won’t be easy. Everyone would do it if it were. Instead, embrace the hard and know the joy often comes in the achievement, not just in the outcome. You will fall down – and you will get back up again. It’s that simple.

Stay curious

Make it a point to learn one new thing every day. Read a book, listen to a podcast or talk to a mentor. It’s the only way we can constantly grow and evolve. You should take that knowledge and share it with the world. Always be a student and a teacher at the same time. Even if you’re scared of taking a new step, remember that it could possibly change your life.

Review the year that went by

Take stock of where you’ve been and appreciate all of the accomplishments you’ve made in the last year. In a typical yearly review, you should answer these types of questions:

  • What went well for me last year?
  • What accomplishments did I have?
  • How did I improve my life?
  • How did I improve my relationships?
  • What did I remove from my life that is now making me happier?
  • What do I wish I had taken more time for?

Keep track of your responses in a journal that you can refer back to in the future. Who knows, maybe your answers over the years are actually enlightening!

Clear your to-do list

Which projects, errands, and a general list of to-do items do you have leftover from the previous year that you can complete in 2 hours or less? Do them now to clear your mind of the old items.

Keeping projects around like pets doesn’t do us any good – they just weigh on our minds, and people will spend hours thinking about something that will only take 10 minutes to take care of.

Be realistic

As much as you may want something, it’s very likely you don’t really believe you can have it. We have to turn a dream into something we can picture accomplishing before it can become a reality.

Take your dream and start breaking it down into milestones. If you want to work from home, what are the steps you need to take? Break those steps down further so you can create a game-plan and start working towards accomplishing that dream.

Focus on what you really want

Speaking of dreaming, ask yourself what your dream looks like. These questions will help define what lifestyle you really want, and give you ideas about how you can achieve that lifestyle. For example, if you see yourself relaxing by the fire with a good book and a cup of tea, ask yourself why you aren’t spending more time that way now. What things are in your way and how can you re-arrange your priorities in order to have the lifestyle you really want?

Prioritize yourself

Using the information you gained above by determining what you really want; put yourself at the top of the list this year. We really can’t help another, until we learn how to help ourselves. Taking care of yourself and striving to reach your own goals will make you a better spouse, friend, child and parent.

Practice gratitude

At the beginning of the day, at the end of the day and all throughout the day, be grateful for what you have, who you are and why you are here. It’s up to you to figure out if your purpose in life can or will be what keeps you here. Gratitude will go a long way to fuel your evolution, so be grateful and you will be amazed at what you see around yourself.
