How Long Does CBD Stay In Your System?

How Long Does CBD Stay In Your System

If you’ve never used CBD before – or even if you’re just starting – you probably have a million questions on your mind as to how it works. One of the most common questions is how long does CBD stay in your system? Some people fear it will show up on their drug test, while others simply want to know how long its effect lasts.

If you’re wondering how long does CBD stays in your system, then you’re at the right place. First and foremost, it’s worth noticing that we need more research before we claim anything definitive. While we do have some research regarding how long CBD lasts, we don’t have a lot. And so, results may vary from person to person.

There are also a few different factors that affect how long CBD stays in the system. These include:

  • Dosage
The more CBD you take, the longer it may stay in your system.
  • Frequency/tolerance
The more frequently you take CBD, the more of a tolerance you build. This may affect the staying time. This is why it’s recommended that you use it for at least a week to see if it works for you. If you only use it occasionally, it’ll clear from your system faster that can influence how long CBD stays in your system.
  • Intake method
There are a lot of ways to take CBD. Vaping CBD, for example, may last shorter or longer than oil, edibles, etc. depending on the user.
  • Your body
Everyone’s body is different. That’s why CBD and other substances affect people differently. Your body mass index, water content, and metabolism are just some of the things that can influence how long CBD stays in your system. If you have a high metabolism, CBD may flush out of your system faster than it would for someone with a low metabolism.
  • Food
What you eat, how much you eat, and when you eat matter too. If you take CBD on an empty stomach, it gets metabolized and eliminated faster than it does when you take it on a full stomach, which slows its digestion.
  • Method of use
There are a few ways to take CBD. The method you use affects everything from the onset and duration of effects to how long CBD stays in your system. Different forms of CBD include:
    – oils and tinctures
    – pills and capsules
    – edibles
    – vapes
    – creams and lotions

How long does CBD stay in your system to take the effects to kick in?

As you might imagine, there are a lot of variables that can influence how long it takes to start feeling the effects of CBD. According to Bonni Goldstein, M.D., medical director of Canna-Centers and author of Cannabis Is Medicine, some of those variables include the dosage you’re taking, the form you’re taking, and the metabolism you have. She says that generally  “ingestion delivers about 4 to 20% of the total dose taken, with the onset of action from one to three hours and duration of effects up to eight to 12 hours.” She adds, “again depending on the dose and a person’s metabolism.”
She follows by stating that it can take a few weeks of consistently taking a CBD product before you’ll know how your body reacts to it.

How long does CBD stay in your system to keep working?

CBD to your workout routine

The studies we have regarding how long does CBD stay in your system give us a guideline to follow. One study shows that CBD oil lasts between two and five days when taken regularly in oil form. Smoking CBD-dominant strains showed a shorter time of 31 hours. This is a very broad range of times but gives CBD users a frame they can work within.

A much older study from 1991 examined the blood of CBD users after high doses. Test subjects took CBD for six weeks and then had their blood examined after a week of non-use. The study found 1.5 nanograms remaining in the blood, a nearly undetectable amount.

So, while we don’t have a solid answer, we can safely say CBD stays in the body for at least five days if not longer. That doesn’t mean the effects last that long, it just means the substance is still in the bloodstream.

Can I fail a drug test if CBD is found in my blood?

You’ll be happy to hear that the cases where CBD causes you to fail a drug test are extremely rare. Most drug tests don’t even test for CBD, as it’s not psychoactive. Although it’s present in marijuana, it’s not the compound that gets people high. THC is responsible for getting a person high, so it’s the presence of THC that should worry you.

It’s important to remember, though, that certain CBD products do contain trace amounts of THC. A CBD product can have up to 0.3% THC and still go on the market. Although this is a tiny amount, it is possible that THC will show up on a drug test if you take a CBD product that contains it.

If THC is found on a drug test, it may result in a failure depending on the state you live in. Assuming you don’t regularly ingest cannabis, THC should leave your system in about 3 days. However, it may last as long as 30 days in a regular smoker.

How to avoid THC in CBD products?

How to avoid THC in CBD products

If you’re worried about THC in your CBD products, it’s important to seek out CBD products without THC. There are two types of CBD that don’t contain THC: broad-spectrum CBD and CBD isolate.

CBD isolate is pure CBD, with all cannabinoids (including THC) removed. This is the purest form of CBD you can get and is often used by athletes and those who undergo regular drug tests. You can get CBD to isolate in oil form, or in any other form, just like other CBD products.

Broad-spectrum CBD products include all the naturally occurring cannabinoids except for THC. The THC is removed in the manufacturing process. This gives the user the most natural way to take CBD without the worry of THC, as the other cannabinoids enhance the effects of the product.
